I have picked a book recommended to me by a colleague at work. It's not a novel, but it contains many anecdotes to keep you engaged. I have read a bit of it and think it will make for a cool read, and it's outside of the box! I find psychology and neuroscience fascinating, and I hope everyone will enjoy reading something a little different. It came very highly recommended!
"Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell
Synopsis:
How do we make decisions—good and bad—and why are some people so much better at it than others? That's the question Malcolm Gladwell asks and answers in the follow-up to his huge bestseller, The Tipping Point. Utilizing case studies as diverse as speed dating, pop music, and the shooting of Amadou Diallo, Gladwell reveals that what we think of as decisions made in the blink of an eye are much more complicated than assumed.
Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology, he shows how the difference between good decision-making and bad has nothing to do with how much information we can process quickly, but on the few particular details on which we focus. Leaping boldly from example to example, displaying all of the brilliance that made The Tipping Point a classic, Gladwell reveals how we can become better decision makers—in our homes, our offices, and in everyday life. The result is a book that is surprising and transforming. Never again will you think about thinking the same way. (From the publisher.)
Gladwell is also the author of The Tipping Point, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw.
As per our conversation - the next meeting will be held on Sunday, May 13th, and will be a picnic (weather permitting). Thats only a few weeks to read the book, happy reading!
P.S. Please mention if you have already read this book. Although books are no longer chosen by vote, I think this should still be taken into consideration.

I would also like to suggest that we discuss the type of books we are choosing before the next book choice is made. We didn't talk about it this time, and I do think this book looks interesting, so we'll leave it for now. But I thought we had agreed in the past to keep it limited to fiction? Lets start a discussion about this and see how the group feels in general... Personally, my preference is for fiction. As I am not really into self-help or biographical, I love a book where I can get lost in the story. What about you girls?
Hi girls, I have already read this book but it is a good one and I found it interesting.
Also, I didn't realize but May 13 is actually Mother's Day! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it that day!

How funny... i literally just downloaded this book on Monday to start reading!!
It sounds really interesting. I like to read things like this so I am for it.
I like that we are mixing it up and doing differnt genres and different styles of books it gets people out of their comfort zone.
But I also agree that we should focus on more fiction books but I dont think it hurts to throw in this type of book once in a while - you never know what can learn from it.
Looking forward to reading it!!
Thanks for the pick heather.
Hey maia - is Jenna on the mailing list now so that these comments get emailed to her?
Nicola
Crap! Is it mothers day? Maybe we can do it on the Saturday May 12 instead?
Sorry Maia, I didn't realize that we were limited to fiction. I'll keep that in mind in the future. I hope that the rest of you will enjoy something a bit different this time.
Oooh actually I can't do Saturday either! :( I will make alternate arrangements with my mom if Sunday still works for most people.
I won't be able to come on Mother's Day either! The book sounds interesting, Heather. Haven't started reading it yet, though.
I didn't mean we have to be limited to fiction, that is just my preference, and can totally change if the group feels differently :) An emphasis on fiction with a few other types of reads thrown in there isn't a bad way to go.
Anyway... It looks like mothers day won't work for most people. I can do the 12th, or we can pick another weekend. I think the 4th/5th is probably too soon, which would push it to June if we want all memebers to be able to attend. Nicola, when are you back from England?
Oh, and yes I've added Jenna to the list so she should be receiving the emails/ comments.
Happy rainy Monday girls!
Hey, my life is currently very flexible. So whatever day works for people is fine by me. What about a week night?
I could do Fridays after work. I work downtown so we could meet here or anywhere along the skytrain line hehe..
May 11, 18, 19, 20 (afternoon), 25, 26, 27 are ok with me
Hey Girls,
FYI - Insurgent by Veronica Roth the sequel to Divergent came out this Week. I have already started reading it !!
Nic
Oooh I'm excited to start reading insurgent too! Looks like its not going to work out for next weekend, and I think many of us are away for May long. I am available the 25, 26, 27. But I'm not sure if Nicola is in town. Lets get this planned!
Also, my friend Sophie will be joining us at the next meeting. She has just moved here from Calgary and is really excited to meet you all!
Insurgent was soooo good! Finished it in two days :)
Unfortunely i wont be available the long weekend and then after that I am gone for two weeks. So i think i may be missing the next meeting unless we decide to have it after June 8th. Lets just go with whatever works best for the majority of people :) Im finding Blink really interesting!!
Looking forward to meeting Sophie!
Have a great monday everyone
Nic
27 May works for me!
The 27 works for me too. Anyone else?
I think thats 4 or 5 of us that can make it on the 27th so lets set that as the date. Hopefully Jenna and Renuka can make it!
I think I should be able to make it on the 27th!
Me too...!
Okay, I'm in for the 27th as well. I would love to still do a picnic, but i'm not sure what the weather will be like next week. I'll figure out where's a good place and let you know.
I have been checking the forecast, and Sunday is supposed to be a nice day. Plan to be at Central Park on Sunday May 27th at 1:30. Park in the parking lot that is South of the Swimming Pool on Boundary Road. I will find us a spot and hopefully a picnic table that is near the upper pond area, (near the horseshoe pit area and the swimming pool). I think a the pot luck idea is great, I'll have all the plates, cups, napkins, forks, knives, etc. I'll bring drinks and some cookies and some other snack.
If these directions are confusing let me know. If you are not keen on Central Park, let me know if you have a better place in mind (Maple Ridge or wherever). I just know Central Park the best.
The closest Sky train station to Central Park is Patterson.
I meant to ask if someone could print out questions for the book. It sounds lame; but I do not have a printer and if it would be no trouble for someone it would be appreciated. Thanks! Looking forward to a picnic on sunday!
I have the questions and I'll bring them with. I will bring some sandwich triangles and a gluten-free alternative too! Yay! See you soon! :)
Hi ladies - I'll bring a spinach salad. See you!
Hey hey, all sounds good! I'll bring chips and dip, and maybe something sweet too. See you there!
M
Thanks for planning this out for us, Cheryl! I'll be bringing something, but I'm not sure what it'll be yet. See you soon! :)
Hi ladies,
I couldn't figure out how to write a new post, so I'm commenting here instead.
I wanted to touch base with you all regarding our next meeting on Sat, June 16th!
I'd like to stick with the picnic idea despite the crummy weather these days. If it rains on the day of our meeting, we could move indoors to my place.
I was thinking that we could meet up at Bear Creek Park here in Surrey. The playground side gets pretty crowded on weekends, but the side with the gardens (entrance on 140th Street) has a huge (and more peaceful) grassy area and some picnic tables. Unfortunately, I don't think it's BBQ-friendly. I've been trying to find the by-laws online to confirm that, but haven't been able to locate them. Perhaps we could do the BBQ in July and/or August, and stick with a regular picnic for June?
PS: I haven't even cracked open Insurgent yet, but I'm thankful to Cheryl for picking a book that's sure to be a quick read!
Bear creek park works for me. I'll bring some sweets to munch on. :)
Hi,
What time should we meet on Saturday? I assume around 1-1:30 as usual? Also, do you know if the park is transit accessable? Unfortunately Cheryl may not be able to make it.
I will bring something, just not sure what yet!
1:30 would be great! The park is most likely transit accessible, but you would need a bus ride from a skytrain station in Surrey. I can pick you up from the skytrain instead if you like :) I dont know what I'm bringing yet either! See you Saturday :)
Hi again,
The weather isn't looking very promising for tomorrow, so we may have to have an indoor picnic at my place instead. The address is 15110 108 Ave (in Surrey), Apt #217. The buzzer number is 903. There is parking available on the street outside the complex. My picnic munchies for tomorrow include potato salad, pasta salad, bread with eggplant dip, chocolate chip cookies, and chips. If the weather does stay nice, I'll bring along the napkins/forks/cups/blankie to the park.
See you tomorrow!
Renuka :)
Hi guys, I'll bring an appy, see you tomorrow!
