January Meeting

Hi girls,

Any volunteers to host the January meeting yet? I think we had discussed January 14th/15th as a possible date? Or the 8th might work as well. We should get it sorted our before Christmas so that everyone can plan accordingly.

If no one can host at their home this month there is also the option of picking a restaurant/ cafe and holding the meeting there. Thoughts?

To those of you just joining the club, welcome! The book we are reading this month is The Virgin Cure. It should be a good one. Feel free to comment and introduce yourself to everyone.

Happy Holidays, XO

December Book Choices

Hi Girls!

Sorry for the delay in this post. But here I am now - so lets get picking books! I'll post my suggestions in the comments below as per usual and you can all do the same.

A couple of notes:

A big thank you to Heather for hosting a lovely meeting last Sunday!

Lets all welcome to our newest member Renuka to the group (again)! It was very nice to meet you Renuka.

I *think* we agreed on a tentative date for the next meeting as the second week of January, being that it is the next time everyone is free, but we are still looking for a volunteer to host the next meeting. Please post in the comments if you would like to host!

Now lets get reading...

Books and Cooks

Hi again,

As you should all know by now, pretty much the only thing I love more than reading is.... Eating!

If the timing works for everyone, I would like to do a Sunday brunch type thing for our first meeting. from 1 PM to about 4, or whenever we finish. I will provide some savory food  (I am thinking a bagel bar?), coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and juice.

Ideas of things to bring would be salad, fruit salad, cookies, cakes, bars (anything sugar ladden of course!). Post in the comments below if you know what you would like to bring, so we dont end up with too much of the same. I am quite excited to talk about this book! And I can't wait to pick the next one.

See you all soon.

XO,

Maia

Book Club Meet Up

Hi ladies,

How are you all coming along with the book? I know some of you have finished, but I'm not quite there yet, so don't give anything away!

I wanted to see how you all felt about changing the date of our first meeting to Sunday, October 23rd?

If this date works for everyone then I would like to do a Sunday brunch type thing. From 1 pm to around 4? Let me know what you think.

XO,

Maia

Vote Time!

Hi again!

We have had some great suggestions and it is time to pick this months book! Lets try and do this today if we can so we can get reading. I know we are all really excited. I've eliminated anything that has already been read by a member. These are the final choices to vote for.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory

Two sisters competing for the greatest prize: the love of a king When Mary Boleyn comes to court as an innocent girl of fourteen, she catches the eye of Henry VIII. Dazzled by the king, Mary falls in love with both her golden prince and her growing role as unofficial queen. However, she soon realizes just how much she is a pawn in her family's ambitious plots as the king's interest begins to wane and she is forced to step aside for her best friend and rival: her sister, Anne. Then Mary knows that she must defy her family and her king, and take her fate into her own hands.

The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy

An exquisitely written book of murder and obsession that takes the true details of the unsolved 1947 Elizabeth Short murder and creates a fictional story of a police detective determined to solve the case. The Black Dahlia is a page turning mystery novel, but it is also much more. Ellroy uses the story to delve into the dark recesses of the human psyche and force the reader to deal with obsession, evil, right and wrong

The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven by Kevin Malarkey

In 2004, Kevin Malarkey and his six-year-old son, Alex, suffered an horrific car accident. The impact from the crash paralyzed Alex—and medically speaking, it was unlikely that he could survive. “I think Alex has gone to be with Jesus,” a friend told the stricken dad. But two months later, Alex awoke from a coma with an incredible story to share. Of events at the accident scene and in the hospital while he was unconscious. Of the angels that took him through the gates of heaven itself. Of the unearthly music that sounded just terrible to a six-year-old. And, most amazing of all . . . Of meeting and talking to Jesus.

The Twentieth Wife

In The Twentieth Wife, first-time novelist Indu Sundaresan introduces readers to life inside a bejeweled, dazzling birdcage--the world of the Mughal Court's zenana, or imperial harem. Her heroine exercises power in the only way available to a woman in 17th-century India: from behind the veil. At the age of 8, Mehrunissa (the name means "Sun of Women") has already settled on her life's goal. After just one glimpse of his face, she wants to marry the Crown Prince Salim. And marry him she does, albeit some 26 years later, after overcoming the opposition of her family, an ill-starred early marriage, numerous miscarriages, and the scheming of other wives.

The Violets of March by Sarah Jio

In her twenties, Emily Wilson was on top of the world: she had a bestselling novel, a husband plucked from the pages of GQ, and a one-way ticket to happily ever after. Ten years later, the tide has turned on Emily's good fortune. So when her great-aunt Bee invites her to spend the month of March on Bainbridge Island in Washington State, Emily accepts, longing to be healed by the sea. Researching her next book, Emily discovers a red velvet diary, dated 1943, whose contents reveal startling connections to her own life.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford

A historical fiction bestselling novel by Jamie Ford about the love and friendship of a Chinese boy and a Japanese girl during the Japanese internment in World War II.

Vote for your pick in the comments below!

Also, as I mentioned in the comments I would like to offer up my house as the spot of the first book club meeting. I am suggesting Saturday, October 22nd as the date. I know it is early days still but let me know when you can if there are any issues with that date and we can adjust.

Welcome to Sweet Reads Book Club!

Hi Ladies,

Thank you so much for joining our book club! We are so looking forward to digging into some great reads, and most of all, to get everyone together for our first meeting! If you have a moment, please take a look at our Book Club Guidelines page. It will explain how we plan to keep things a little bit organized. But there is lots of room for suggestions and new ideas, so feel free to speak up! Once you are all clear on that, the fun part can start! Simply scroll below to the comments section and start suggesting books. As we mentioned, it will be very helpful to include a short description to the book or link to a book review. Amazon is great for this. Also, you are more than welcome to invite anyone you think might like to join. The more the merrier, our intention is to read some great books and get to know some awesome girls!

So without further adieu, what would you like to read this month?
